Hospice care A special kind of healthcare focused on keeping the patient comfortable once the patient and physician have decided that the underlying disease can no longer be treated or cured. It neither hastens nor postpones death and is focused on the belief that quality of life is as important as length of life. Care is given to help manage pain and symptoms and provide emotional and spiritual support so patients can make the most of each day. Hospice care helps the patient, their families, and other caregivers.
How are people referred? The majority of our patients are referred by Clinical Nurse Specialists and Doctors. Some referrals come directly from the patient and family.
Staffing The Hospice is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of full and part-time staff who specialise in various aspects of palliative care. Other vital roles are performed by our many voluntary staff. We are always looking for people who may wish to volunteer a few hours a week to help in these shops, either on the counter or behind the scenes.

The hospice movement in the UK is famous around the world for looking after dying people with dignity and skill. Since the late 1990s, the Liverpool Care Pathway has been helping to spread elements of the hospice model of care into other healthcare settings, such as hospitals, care homes and people’s own homes. There has been recent public debate about the Liverpool Care Pathway and much apparent misinterpretation and misinformation in certain parts of the media.
