We are continually being astounded by the remarkable lengths our supporters will go to, to raise funds for Lindsey Lodge…

In June 2019, Scarborough man Ray Clarke completed Wainwright’s Lost Tour - a gruelling 97 mile walk - covering lakes, mountains and valleys in the Lake District, in just six days, raising over £1,500 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice, as a tribute to his long time friend, Charles ‘Chas’ Dowie, with whom he joined the Army as part of the ‘B’ intake – 67B – to the then Army Apprentices College in Harrogate  as 15 year olds in 1967.

Chas, who has Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and receives support from Lindsey Lodge Hospice’s Wellbeing Centre said: “Ray wanted a ‘grande finale’ to his lifetime hobby of long distance walking, so he planned an unusual walk – Wainwrights Lost Walk’ -  a distance of 97 miles, and I was very touched when he suggested raising money for Lindsey Lodge.”

He added: “The Hospice helps me in so many ways; it’s a real lifeline for someone like me.

“Not only do I get access to specialist health carers who monitor my physical and mental health, I meet other patients with similar experiences, who I’m able to talk with and share information on how we’re affected and what we do to cope, I feel a true sense of belonging when I’m there.”

“I can’t be cured, but I can be cared for, and that’s what Lindsey Lodge Hospice does, it’s a truly local charity that cares for local people – just like me.”

Ray walked the 97 miles and ran the last 400m to honour Chas’ athletics career – he was the Army 200m champion and 4 x 400m champion – record that still stands today after 47 years.

Ray kept us up to date with his progress with some fantastic photos he sent us over the six days, and he even visited the Hospice to share the highs and lows of his epic journey with our patients and Hospice Team.

So a huge thanks to Ray for choosing to support us. We need the support of our local community now, more than ever, so please donate to our Covid-19 Emergency Appeal online at: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/LindseyLodgeEmergencyAppeal
