We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our incredible volunteers. Did you know that 30 hours of volunteered time saves over £300 in staff costs every year? Could you pledge to volunteer 30 hours throughout the year?

We have a number of volunteering opportunities available, perfect if you’re looking for new experiences or to gain new skills.
 

Regular commitment roles


Retail
We have a number of busy retail outlets across North Lincolnshire and a Retail Distribution and Donation Centre in Scunthorpe town centre, which rely heavily on volunteer support. Volunteering in our shops will provide you with valuable retail experience. Whether it’s working on the tills, merchandising, sorting donations or customer service, you’ll have the opportunity to develop or learn a number of new skills.

Catering
As a volunteer in our Meet and Eat cafe your role will include not only helping to support the running of our on-site cafe, but also to help make our visitors feel welcome and enjoy great food within a relaxed and friendly setting. Volunteering as part of a small catering team, you will have the opportunity to get involved in food preparation, taking and serving orders and processing payments. We are looking for friendly and approachable volunteers who are able to work on their own initiative and care about delivering good customer service.  Individuals should have an up to date Basic Food Hygiene certificate although full training will be provided if you don’t already possess this certificate. A range of hours are available.

Gardening
Volunteering in the gardens at Lindsey Lodge, your role will include not only helping to support the maintenance and development of our gardens and courtyard areas, but provide an opportunity to work alongside North Lincolnshire council garden team that lead the maintenance project. Volunteering as part of a small group of existing volunteers – tasks include – maintaining flower beds, cutting lawns, watering flowers, maintaining patient area courtyards, ensuring pathways are clean and tidy along with any other tasks associated with our gardens. A range of hours are available and will be mutually agreed between the individual and the business manager.

One-off roles

Event support
Whether it’s manning a cheering checkpoint, helping to manage a start area or collecting with a bucket at the supermarket, our events volunteers play a vital role in making events happen. Once you’re in as an events volunteer it’s easy to get hooked.  For some people it’s the excitement of event day and meeting new people.  For others it’s developing new skills and being more behind the scenes.  All of our volunteers are passionate about the cause and that’s what makes the difference.
You may be asked to:

  • Control car parking
  • Meet and greet participants/spectators
  • Help set up and clear down an event
  • Support participants as they take part by marshalling routes, by walking, manning stations, cycling or driving
  • Cheering or handing out refreshments
  • Manning stalls
  • Bucket collecting
  • Help with administration and managing of start/finish areas

How much time do I have to give as a volunteer?
The amount of time varies for each opportunity, this will be outlined by the Line Manager. It may be for one-off event support, a short term project or long term regular commitment to services.
 
What skills do I need to volunteer?
The skills needed depend on the opportunity and nature of the project. Some roles don’t require a specific skill set - we are looking for enthusiasm, commitment and workplace values. Any particular skills you need will be clearly stated in the role definition.
 
What will I get out of volunteering?
That depends on the reasons you chose to volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to employ existing skills or further your knowledge whilst also meeting new people and improving confidence.
 
Will I interviewed?
All roles involve an invite for a taster session, this provides an opportunity to spend time in the work area and understand the role requirements. An informal chat and application form will follow if you and the Line Manager agree your suitability for the volunteer role.
 
Will I be paid expenses?
You will be reimbursed for reasonable expenses. The types of expenses you are able to claim will be confirmed once you are offered the volunteering role.
 
Do you offer training?
We provide the necessary training to help you perform our role effectively. You will be expected to undertake Induction and/or specific training. This depends on the role you will be fulfilling.
 
What support will I get?
Your Line Manager will be the main point of contact, you can approach them with any questions, concerns, or enquiries on health and safety. We encourage Line Managers to have a catch up with volunteers to check how they are getting on, address any issues and discuss opportunities.
 
Can I leave if I don’t like it?
Yes, of course you can! We want all our volunteers to have a worthwhile and positive experience so always welcome feedback, to help us make improvements. We actively encourage volunteers to talk to us before making a decision to leave.
