Supporting Carers at Lindsey Lodge Hospice

This Carers Week, we’re highlighting the vital support available for carers at Lindsey Lodge Hospice. We understand the immense challenges carers face, and we’re dedicated to offering both practical and holistic solutions to help them every step of the way.

Comprehensive Support for Carers

Our commitment to carers goes beyond the patient. We offer a wide range of services designed to ease their burden and provide much-needed assistance:

  • Practical Assistance: We help carers access crucial resources such as funding information, essential equipment, and training to manage symptoms and continue rehabilitation after a patient is discharged.
  • Holistic Wrap-Around Care: Our Family Support Team, run by our compassionate counselling team, provides invaluable holistic care. If we notice a carer is struggling, we can refer them to this team for support and coping mechanisms, even before a bereavement. This proactive approach can be incredibly beneficial as a patient approaches end-of-life care.
  • Daily Check-ins at the Wellbeing Centre: Our Wellbeing Centre team greets both patients and carers every morning. This daily check-in allows carers to provide updates and gives our team the opportunity to monitor their welfare. We’ve recently introduced “cuppa and a chat” times during pick-up and drop-off, offering a relaxed space for carers to connect and feel supported.
  • Specialised Support Groups:
    • Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Support Group: Our newly launched MND support group is for both individuals living with MND and their carers. It provides a unique opportunity for carers facing similar circumstances to connect, share experiences, and support one another.
    • Carers Support Group: Our monthly Carers Group is open to anyone caring for a person with a life-limiting illness, regardless of whether the patient is from Lindsey Lodge. This group offers a safe and understanding environment for peer-to-peer connection.

The Power of Peer Support: Our Carers Support Group

At the heart of our carer support is our incredible Carers Support Group, which meets on the last Thursday of every month from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Lindsey Lodge Hospice. This group is more than just a meeting; it’s a lifeline for its members.

Each session includes our Lindsey Lodge Hospice Matron, a member of our Family Support Team, and the Carers Support Liaison from Brigg. These professionals are on hand to offer guidance, signposting to additional resources, and updates.

The true strength of the Carers Support Group lies in its peer-to-peer connection. Members provide a supportive space to discuss challenges, share frustrations, and even celebrate small victories.

Beyond the monthly meetings, the group maintains an active WhatsApp group, which has proven invaluable for day-to-day support, lifting spirits on down days, and even providing practical help in emergencies. Many members describe the group as a “lifeline.”

Through their participation in the Carers Support Group, some members have also gone on to access direct support from Lindsey Lodge, including respite care, admissions to our Wellbeing Centre, and family support.

We are incredibly proud of the support we offer to carers and are continually looking for ways to enhance these vital services. If you are a carer of someone with a life limiting illness and want to join our Carers Support Group get in touch with our team today.
