41 Bears and counting: How Michelle is Turning Family Keepsakes into Essential Hospice Funds

Michelle Plumtree handcrafts beautiful, bespoke “Memory Bears” from the clothing of those who have sadly passed, turning cherished garments into comforting, tangible keepsakes for families to treasure forever.

Michelle’s dedication to Lindsey Lodge stems from a very personal place. Three years ago, the hospice provided outstanding end-of-life care for her mum, Margaret Rodger. The exceptional support and compassion their family received during such a difficult time left a lasting impression on Michelle and her family.

The idea for the Memory Bears first sparked after her mum passed away, when Michelle came upon a tartan skirt belonging to Margaret and couldn’t bear to part with it. Inspired, she decided to transform it into a bear for her brother as a gift at Christmas. His emotional reaction blew her away.

However, It was only after a supportive meeting with Lindsey Lodge Fundraiser, Emma, that Michelle gained the confidence she needed to officially launch her service and share her gift with the wider community. Since then, she has been on a steadfast mission to give back.

“My number one priority is to raise funds for the hospice,” Michelle says. “But aside from that, I personally love to see the reactions from the families who receive the bears and seeing the difference it makes to them.”

Michelle’s bears are priced at £65, with £25 from every single bear donated directly to Lindsey Lodge. Given the weeks of intricate work that go into crafting each unique bear, Michelle only takes home around £5 after expenses—but for her, the time and effort are entirely worth it.

What makes Michelle’s beautiful creations even more remarkable is that she has never had any professional seamstress training. Having worked for 38 years as a PA in the NHS, Michelle is completely self-taught.

She recalls first learning to sew at the tender age of four. After a lifetime of making and altering her own clothes to get the perfect fit, she has honed her skills over the decades, with many customers remarking on just how exceptionally neat and professional her finished work is.

Over the past year alone, Michelle has lovingly crafted 41 bears, raising an incredible £1,275 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

Stepping Out for the Glow Walk

Michelle’s incredible fundraising efforts don’t stop at the sewing machine. She has also recently signed up for her 10th Lindsey Lodge Glow Walk!

For Michelle, the Glow Walk is a highlight of her fundraising calendar. She loves taking part because, while it still poses a rewarding physical challenge, it remains highly accessible and achievable for more people.

With its electric, warm, and supportive atmosphere, the night offers Michelle yet another fantastic opportunity to lace up her trainers, celebrate her mum’s memory, and raise even more vital funds for the hospice care she holds so close to her heart.
