In Memory of a Lost Loved One
Join us for an evening of remembrance, comfort, and music at our annual Light Up a Life service on Thursday, 3rd December at 7:00 pm.
We will gather at John Leggott College (West Common Lane, Scunthorpe, DN17 1DS) for a heartfelt service featuring carols, readings, and reflections. It is a gentle space to celebrate the lives of those we hold dear and share in collective warmth this festive season. During the service will take a special moment to feature the names of your loved one on big screen for a special moment fof reflection.
Everyone is welcome to attend, whether or not your loved one was cared for by the Hospice.
During the service, you can dedicate a light in their memory, which will illuminate our Memorial Garden throughout December. You will also receive two commemorative decorations:
- One to place on our light up a life tree during the service, bearing your personal message, which will later be placed in the Hospice Summer House alongside our book of dedication.
- One to take home, to hang on your own tree and cherish.
Your loved one’s name will also be displayed in our Book of Dedication kept here at the hospice and available to view in our summer house from 26th November.
Can’t make it to our event?
You can still be a part of the service from the comfort of your own home. We’ll be streaming the event live on our YouTube channel, so you can participate wherever you are.
If our event is not for you, you can still dedicate a light in memory of your loved one.
With a donation to the Hospice, we will send you two commemorative tree decorations. You can personalise one with a message to place somewhere meaningful to you, while keeping the second to hang on your own tree at home.
Your loved one’s name will also be displayed in our Book of Dedication. This will be displayed alongside our Christmas tree in the Hospice Summer House, where you are warmly invited to visit and view it from Thursday, 26th November.

Supporting you this Christmas
Emma Thorpe MBACP, Palliative Lead Counsellor
Here at Lindsey Lodge Hospice, we all recognise that Christmas can be very challenging following bereavement. We fully understand how difficult this Christmas may feel for you following the loss of your loved one. Our support and care has not just been for your family member at the hospice, we are here for you too as you navigate grief and loss.
Remember there is no set way to grieve, we are all unique and so is our grief. Whilst some people may approach Christmas with a sense of dread, others will feel ambivalent and some may feel determined to enjoy it. These are all normal responses to grief at Christmas. Allow yourself to step away from the pressures of a usual Christmas if that is what you need. You can give yourself permission to carry on with old traditions, start new ones or simply step away and choose not to celebrate – listen to your feelings about what is right for you. You may want to share your plans with friends and family so they are aware and know how to support you. You may change your mind nearer the time, that is normal too. Likewise other family members may choose a different way of being which is right for them.
Ensure you have time to focus on your wellbeing; rest time, a walk, comforting activities and peaceful reflection if needed. Grief and the many emotions it carries can be very tiring, both physically and emotionally, you may have less energy. Be gentle with yourself.
Grief can feel isolating and lonely throughout the year, Christmas can heighten this as it can feel we are surrounded by everyone else having fun and having a “normal” Christmas, it can be hard to escape from it on television, in the shops, on the radio and social media.
If your family member was cared for at Lindsey Lodge Hospice, then you can access counselling from our Family Support team, please do contact us and ask for Emma and Debbie, we will be glad to speak with you.
We also have a monthly bereavement group on the last Thursday of every month (2-4pm), this group is open to all in the community, not just families of those cared for at the hospice. This is a friendly, warm and supportive group and we would be very pleased to welcome you.
